Congratulations. You've officially left the nest. Whether you've moved into your first rental, bought your first place, or convinced three mates that living together will be "easy", you've entered a brand new chapter of adulthood. A chapter filled with freedom, independence, and the sudden realisation that toilets don't magically clean themselves.
Unfortunately.
As former professional cleaners, we've seen firsthand what happens when cleaning gets pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. We've also seen what happens when people panic-buy 47 different cleaning products because they don't know where to start.
So before your shower starts growing its own ecosystem, here's our guide to surviving your first place like a pro.
1. clean little and often
We know. Revolutionary stuff. When you first move out, it's easy to think cleaning is something you do once the house looks like it's been hit by a small natural disaster or better yet - expect Mum will just appear while you're at work and everything will be magically clean by the time you get home... Sadly, Mum doesn't come as a standard addition with the house and cleaning becomes much harder when you leave everything until later.
Putting off your cleaning can mean a quick vacuum turns into wondering where your roommate has disappeared to under the sea of grime on the floor and an easy run out to the bin becomes counting the number of new roommates you have acquired... in the form of cockroaches, flies, rats...
The easier way? A simple wipe of the bathroom once a week, picking up a couple items as you walk through a room to tidy, a whip around a vacuum after work so you can just spend your weekends relaxing.
Five minutes here and there saves you hours later. Trust us.
2. you don't need 500 different cleaning products
One of the biggest mistakes we see is people filling an entire cupboard with products they'll use twice a year. You've got a bathroom cleaner, a shower cleaner, a glass cleaner, a grout cleaner, and a mystery spray someone recommended on TikTok. Before long, you've spent half your grocery budget on cleaning supplies (half of which do the same thing).
The truth is, most homes can be cleaned with a handful of quality products that actually do their job. Our range was designed around exactly that idea.
Instead of cluttering your cupboard with products for every imaginable scenario, keep versatile solutions on hand that can tackle multiple surfaces and everyday messes. Your wallet and your storage space will thank you.
3. mould is much easier to prevent than remove
If there's one thing we'd like every first-time renter to understand, it's this: mould loves neglect. It loves steam, it adores poor ventilation, and if nobody ever opens a bathroom window - it will be just about ready to start plotting how to claim your house for itself.
If your bathroom is regularly damp, make a habit of:
- Running the exhaust fan
- Opening windows when possible
- Wiping down excess moisture
- Treating mould as soon as it appears
A tiny spot of mould can soon turn into a new bathroom feature that you never asked for, so it's best to keep on top of it. If mould does start making itself at home, pro mould was built specifically to tackle it at the source rather than simply hiding the problem.
4. your shower is secretly plotting against you
You use it every day, which means every day, it's collecting soap scum, body oils, minerals, and enough residue to eventually make your shower glass look permanently foggy. The trick is not letting it build up.
A quick spray and regular maintenance can save you from future scrubbing sessions that leave you questioning your life choices.
Pro shower is designed for exactly these moments, helping tackle the grime before it turns into a full-time job.
5. learn your rental inspection schedule
Nothing motivates cleaning quite like a property manager with a clipboard, and rental inspections have a funny way of sneaking up on people. One minute you've got months and the next, you're Googling "how to reclaim my kitchen sink" at 11pm.
Know your inspections happen every quarter? Don't leave cleaning your oven until the day before. Keep everything maintained throughout the year and just give a lil' extra love to those problem children (we're looking at you, shower) in the week leading up to the inspection. Future-you will be grateful.
6. the kitchen deserves more attention than you think
Most people focus on obvious mess: dirty dishes, crumbs, the stovetop after spaghetti night (which looks closer to a crime scene than anything else). Thing is, they're not the only things that need a bit of attention. You've got your rangehood filters, splashbacks, cupboard fronts, and the inside of your microwave too.
Grease and grime have a sneaky habit of building up gradually until one day, you notice everything feels slightly sticky. A regular wipe-down keeps things under control and makes deep cleans far less painful.
7. cleaning doesn't have to be perfect
This might be our favourite tip. A lot of people think cleaning has to be an all-day event but it really doesn't. You don't need colour-coded schedules and your home doesn't always need to look like it's a showroom.
The goal isn't perfection. The goal is staying on top of things so your home stays comfortable, healthy, and doesn't start developing mysterious smells.
Small efforts consistently beat giant cleaning marathons every single time.
welcome to adulting
Moving out for the first time comes with a learning curve. You'll probably forget to buy toilet paper at least once, you'll discover that laundry doesn't fold itself, and you'll learn that cleaning is much easier when you've got the right products and a few good habits.
The good news? You don't need to be a professional cleaner- that's our job.
Whether you're tackling bathroom grime, battling mould, or simply trying to keep your first place looking respectable, we've got your back. Real homes get messy and real people deserve products that work in the real world.
